Bjornstad Cellars

bijornstad.jpgBjornstad Cellars was founded by Greg Bjornstad.

About Greg Bjornstad:
In 1989, Greg Bjornstad started graduate school at U.C. Davis studying Viticulture. Armed with a degree from Colorado State in Agronomy, with an emphasis in Foreign Services, and a newfound passion for wine, Greg was destined to create his own vintage in the beautiful Northern California region.  During one of his many scholarship internships, he had the opportunity to attend the much-adored Chateau Lafite Rothschild in France. It was here he honed his skills while learning the traditional methods of the legendary First Growth of Bordeaux.

Bjornstad Winemaking:
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the two varietals that Bjornstad Cellars have mastered. Currently, Bjornstad Cellars has 3 different Pinots to choose from: Sonoma County, Hellenthal and Van der Kamp Vineyards.  This gives people a chance to taste the delicious flavors from the different parts of Sonoma County's eclectic terrains from which these grapes are grown.

Ritchie Vineyard, Porter-Bass Vineyard, Barbed Oak Vineyard and Keefer Ranch are the roots from which these precious Chardonnay grapes hail from.  Greg Bjornstad has made it his business to work with each grower as much as he is able, “from grape to glass,” (Bjornstad).  With two sorting sessions, one at the vineyard and one at the winery, perfection is the ultimate goal of Greg Bjornstad.  He wants to instill the perfect flavor and texture from each vineyard's distinct pallette.

The sites where these Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes are grown range across Sonoma County, yet all have these things in common: cool, off-shore Pacific Ocean winds, cooler temperatures and high elevations.  Whether it’s the Hellenthal Vineyard, lying just 5 miles from the Pacific or the 800-foot elevation in Bennett Valley (Barbed Oak Vineyard), they produce similar characteristics in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; such characteristics that intrigue the winemaker and keep the customer coming back for more.
